The charge for you this month is to take charge of your life. However, before you can take charge of your life, you have to know who you are and where you are headed. So, this month I will be focusing on the subject of IDENTITY.
Your Identity is the ‘fact of being’ who you are. It is your individuality, authentic self or core essence. It is what makes you who you are. On a deeper level, your identity extends beyond who you are to include the way you think about yourself, the way you are viewed by the world and the characteristics that define you. Formation of identity is a crucial aspect of your life.
When you have a strong connection and commitment to your identity, you live a more holistic, balanced, healthier, happier and successful life. When you lack a sense of identity, you begin to question your sense of self and worth. This is referred to as an ‘identity crisis’ and in its severe form, you can experience personal conflict, restlessness, panic attack and a decline in your mental health.
Identity crisis will usually rear its ugly head in times of great change, transition, stress or adversity. For instance, during
- An extremely traumatic period
- Unexpected health issues
- Relocation to a new place
- Divorce or separation
- Sudden loss of job
- Loss or grief
- Midlife crisis
WHAT TO DO:
If you are currently going through an identity crisis, you will need to engage in a holistic exploration. Some questions to start with include: ‘who am I’? What are my values and principles? What assumptions am I making about my life right now? How true are these assumptions? How can I reframe what is going on in my life?
